Mark Sprenger - Director of Disaster Response and Relief

Mark Sprenger joined HISG in 2007 after 33 years of experience in emergency response and emergency response training. He is a gifted teacher whose forward thinking has earned local, national and international distinction among peers and students.

Mark began his career as a firefighter in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1973. He responded to an estimated 10,000 emergencies over 17 years and was promoted to leadership positions directing Rescue Squads, Companies, and an entire Fire Battalion consisting of nine stations and over 100 personnel.

As a firefighter, Mark identified a need for training among emergency responders in handling hazardous materials. He formed Fire Management, Inc. in 1980 to fill this need. FMI took on the challenges of creating and publishing training materials, inspecting facilities for safety, and even writing new laws and standards. Everything FMI produced was the first subject matter material of its kind, and Mark was asked to teach hazardous material seminars to emergency responders, local officials and utility workers nationwide.

Following the success of Fire Management, Inc., Mark launched a second company in 1986 called OnGUARD. OnGUARD soon became the largest publisher of emergency response video and textbook training programs in the world. It was distributed worldwide to roughly 20,000 agencies and is responsible for training about 5.5 million firefighters, emergency medical technicians and law enforcement officers. Mark constantly incorporated new technology including PowerPoint Presentations, Excel spreadsheets, and audio and video training to provide a comprehensive and state of the art training course.

By 2001 Mark was a full-time training and curriculum expert, and expanded OnGUARD to become Emergency WORLD. This new company provided e-learning courses for emergency responders all over the world. Emergency WORLD was quickly adopted as the training module for the United States Air Force, the Depart of Defense and the California Peace Officers. Mark’s Emergency WORLD courses combined comprehensive conventional training and with training for emerging threats like terrorist attacks or biological warfare. The cost-effectiveness of the system along with the thorough and easy-to-use nature of the courses spurred Emergency WORLD’s success and it was soon purchased in a multi-million dollar buyout by Oklahoma State University.

Mark lives at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Fort Collins, Colorado with his wife Maria.
